Wind Turbine

In 2009, Other World Computing took the lead in alternative power use by private enterprise in Illinois by switching to a clean power source that is limitless and plentiful -- wind.

The wind turbine generates 1,200,000 kWh estimated per year (kilowatt hours per year) -- more than 2X (double) the amount that the FasterMac datacenter needs to operate each year.

The anticipated surplus power is sold back to the municipality so that others in the area can use clean, green power.

Municipal Power

In the unlikely event that wind power is not available, or additional demand dictates, the FasterMac datacenter is connected for on-demand utilization of the local municipal power utilities providing an endless supply of power.

Natural-Gas Powered Generator

Our natural gas powered generator provides the third level of redundancy for our datacenter at FasterMac. Although extremely unlikely to be needed, our generator stands ready with an endless run time capability through its constant supply of natural gas fuel. Should that fuel supply become unavailable, the FasterMac generator is also able to be powered using readily available alternative fuels.

Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS Battery Backup)

Rounding out our 4 layers of redundant power is our sophisticated battery backup solution. The uninterruptible power supply (UPS) supporting the OWC.net datacenter ensures that clean steady power is always available no matter what.
